Rainy Day Fun

It's a rainy day here in Northeast Ohio. Storms began moving in earlier and it wasn't long before my son started to get restless.

So what to do on rainy days when everyone is stuck inside? At times it can be hard to think of an alternative plans quickly, and if your kids are like mine at all..You need to have backup plans! Below are a few suggestions to help the kids beat those bad weather blues. Did I mention you'll keep your sanity too?

1. Have a lunch buffet

• Slice up cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, onions, and other veggies your kids like
• Sit out various meats, peanut butter, cream cheese, seeds, etc
• Add a variety of condiments and pickles
• Whole grain breads, wraps, pitas and bagels make great fun for lunch
• Include healthy snack mixes, yogurts, and fresh fruits on the buffet
Voila! Let the kids get creative with this quick and easy sandwich making station.

2. Bake

• Use the extra time spent indoors to get some baking done, the kids will enjoy helping

3. Clean

• Have the kids help with chores around the house, perhaps make some sort of contest out of it.

4. Story time

• Keep a few "special" books just for rainy days
• Prepare a fun healthy snack and snuggle up together with the book. Make it more fun- turn off the lights and read by flashlight.

5. Rainy day box

• What's a rainy day box? A box or container filled with puzzles, games, materials for crafts, and so on. Don't have a rainy day box? Let your kids help make one for the next time the weather turns bad.
• Only bring the box out on rainy days or it will lose it's appeal.
• Add things that the kids don't use on a daily basis such as glitter markers, play dough, special coloring books, and so on. Save scraps to add to the box..Pieces of cardboard, paper towel tubes, ribbons and so on.

These are just a few quick suggestions, as I need to go get our rainy day box out now! But use your imagination..it's surprising how the simplest things can really be great fun for kids.
